Inexpensive HE Washing Machine Cleaner Recipe for less than .50 cents a Treatment

Make your own HE washing machine cleaner for less

Folks, it drives me nuts that I have to pay for a cleaner to clean the machine that I already put cleaner in to clean the clothes I put in it. Whew; that was a mouthful. That H.E. washing machine cleaner is EXPENSIVE! Not to mention, if you don't use it regularly, the washer Stinks to high heavens. In a perfect world, I'd still be using my old washer and old detergent. I swear these new ones don't clean as well as the old. Whatever, we're saving the planet, so the effort is worth the reward.

Okay, enough with the soapbox speech. It is what it is and we have to deal with it. When I went to purchase, yet again, my washing machine cleaner, I cringed at the costs. It dawned on me; I bet I can make this stuff cheaper and possibly better than what I'm buying. That's all it took. I set off on a new mission to find out the ingredients and where to purchase them. Once I figured that out, I had to find, readily available items that were inexpensive...I've Done it!

This is so easy and inexpensive!

What you will need:
1 Measuring cup for just the laundry
1 box of OxyClean (I use the Odor Blaster version) $7.56 for 48 oz box .16 cents per oz
1 box of Washing Soda $3.97 for a 55 oz box .07 cents per oz

You will use 4 oz per treatment; 2 oz of each product for a total of .46 cents a treatment.

Please note: Read Warnings and Precautions on both before proceeding.

Instructions:
In your measuring cup, measure 1/4 of a cup or 2 oz of OxyClean, and 1/4 cup or 2 oz of Washing Soda. Pour powders into the washing machine tub and set the machine for the Cleaning Mode. When cycle completes, open the lid, and leave open until ready to use. You should leave the lid open on the washer between uses to prevent mold and mildew from growing.

That's it! Less than .50 cents a treatment compared to about $1.50 a piece for the retail cleaners.

  1. Really wonderful cleaner. I'm already using this. Sometimes cleaning services are much expensive. Thanks for sharing.
